by Anduin no.The sole purpose of assigning a hero to a unit type is the ability to have one additional fate card to choose from. Nothing more.

by sigmazero13 I agree with Mark. There is a Tactics card (or a Commander card? I have to look) that allows the Hero to take damage during combat, but those are exceptions to the norm.
