Yes. The only time you must choose an undamaged unit to rout/retreat is if you are applying it to your own units. When you choose an enemy unit, you can choose ANY of their units, damaged or not.
Scott, could you refer me to where you got the last sentence from? Wonder if it's one of those rulings from 1ed that might need to get revised.
Hmm, I need to go through my emails and see if there was one specific to this.
However, I base the sentence on two other rulings:
- The Latari Archer units can use Crack Shot to damage ANY opposing unit. Even if there is a standing, damaged unit in the opponent's army, the Latari player can deal damage to an undamaged or routed unit if he chooses, with Corey specifically saying that the only time the "damaged units first" rule applies is when damaging your own units.
- The Chaos Lord - when he uses his ability, it's been ruled that the Uthuk player can choose already-routed units, even if there are standing units in the battle.
However, you do make a good point - the current entry in my Rulings document about Word of Vaal says that must be an undamaged standing unit if possible. But that ruling was based on the original edition of the ability (when the Latari's opponent chose the unit). Because I want this document to be 100% confirmed rulings, I'll shoot an email off to Corey to get confirmation that with the change to Word of Vaal, that this ruling is also changed to match that with the Archer and Chaos Lord, but I'm pretty sure it will be confirmed.
Thanks for pointing that out!!!
(I really need to stop procrastinating and get the next version of the document put together. I have a handful of rulings that have just been sitting there waiting for me to update!)
