If it's more fun for him this way, it's DEFINITELY valuable trying it. One of the best things about board games is that we can tweak them to our satisfaction.
I just want to point out the fact that small changes in a complex games like this can lead to unforeseeable results. And certain mechanics can definitely grow on you.
It's also a thing of "playing" around an issue. If the problem lies with early duels, then it's simply because this part of the game is not supposed to be done that early anyways. Players will realize that after a while and adjust their playstyle. If the whole duel mechanic is offputting, then some alternatives should definitely be discussed.
