Okay, so what's your opinion, do you find that the duel mechanic is entirely off-putting to the point of being broken down and functioning poorly? Such that the rules must be changed? That's an entirely different scope; if that is truly the case then yes alternatives must be discussed -- but in the context of the existing design.

Moreover, I'm not in favor of 'balkanizing' every board game just because we can. I don't see that as one of the top five things to like about board games. To present an extreme example, we couldn't have chess championships because I want pawns to move like rooks (because moves should be more exciting for all pieces as in other games), yet my opponent wants them to move like bishops. We'd have to argue about those mods before we played a game that is still unrecognizable from the classic game.

Obviously that's more than tweaking, but I think overlaying rules from another game is also more than a tweak.

What I sense is that there are people not satisfied with the Fate card mechanic in more ways than just duels. The concern about duels being boring is related to that overarching issue.
