I think the Daqan units tend to be pretty good at defense, especially if you have a Stronghold with the +2 Strength development on it.The starting influence and tactics tend to equalize themselves during a game as time goes on - the areas/resources acquired during the game tend to have much more impact. I've seen games where Uthuk dominates the influence game simply because of the cities and resources they have.
(Daqan also tends to hold their own with Tactics cards due to the Knights).
