I dont think we've played it that wrong, and that this starts to sound more complicated than it actually is.Just confirm this:
If I as attacker would draw 3 orbs against a defenders units of the same initiative and that orb effect would kill or rout them all, their cards would still be resolved, regardless of the outcome of the attackers card?
And the defender decides what to remove, and possibly, an attacker could kill off all slower units than the first ones, resulting in no cards being drawn for the defender at all that combat?
Or do you still draw the full number of cards for dead units?
Honestly, I think I'm just making it more complicated the more I think about it now.. lol
