To be honest, if you like Nexus Ops, then I think Runewars will up the ante just right. Both games have you moving troops around a map to control resources, combat is similar (though Runewars has a few nuances). Both games revolve around victory points as a winning metric. Runewars has larger fights and the units have interested powers. Victory points are measured almost like Secret Missions, in that your Opponents don't have an immediate idea of how many dragon runes you hold (though it can be guessed by actions and careful deduction.)
If you don't mind more complex being a factor in Nexus Ops vs Runewars, I think you'll be right at home with a large majority of the concepts in Runewars. The rest will just be learning the overall rules and developing a strategy. :)
