Not a fan of the exploration tokens. We played a three-player game once and within the first few turns one player got arbitrarily set back significantly by one of the exploration tokens (I can't remember the specifics but I think it wiped out some units). But he was always about two moves behind for the rest of the game. It felt completely arbitrary, it made that player less competitive (and made him enjoy the game less as a result) and it didn't ADD anything to the game. Every time we had to look up what a token did felt like wasted time.I think they could be a reasonable option once you've played the base game a few times and need to sprinkle a little variety seasoning on the game. But our overall impression was that what we gained (maybe some "flavor?" I'm not really sure WHAT we gained with them) was not worth what it cost to use them (added time for rules consultations and one player set arbitrarily back a few turns).
