-)If a player decides to not use his hero in a defending battle and loses the battle, does the hero remains standing upright or must he retreat?

Here I am not 100% sure, but as far as I am concerned heroes that do not participate in battle, don't need to retreat. Otherwise the decision would be obsolete, because you wouldn't gain anything from not taking heroes into battle.

-)When a the player with supporting heroes had to retreat after battle, because he lost the strength count, what happens with the retreating heroes? Do they have to retreat? Where can they retreat?

If the heroes supported in battle, they have to retreat to the same area, your units retreated to. When you lost, but have no units to retreat, all heroes still have to retreat to the same area.

-)When an enemy enters a tile with a routed hero of another player, is the hero going to die just like normal units?

No. Heroes can only die in duels or due to special events. Even if you enter the area with an enemy hero during the quest phase and start a duel, the duel will be resolved as if the hero was standing.

-)When do fortresses get damaged? Only if the owner loses the battle on this tile, or whenever a battle is fought on this tile?

1) When the owner looses the battle and the attacker decided to take over the stronghold.
2) The defender won the battle and the attacker has at least one standing unit left after the battle. If all attacker units are destroyed are have to retreat, the stronghold won't get damaged.

-)Can you recruit units in a damaged fortress? This is a crucial question considering this one tactic card that lets you set up a damaged fortress on a every possible empty/neutral controlled tile.

Yes, you can. That's why this card is quite powerful. But you need to have a hero on the tile to build the stronghold.
