thanks for your clarifications/corrections Scott. I hope I will manage to get all the rules for once.However the rules really are all over the place and have to be collected from many different pages (bad translations only add to the difficulty, especially if routed and retreat is translated with retreating and retreat in german).
I am pretty sure though that routed heroes can't draw fate-cards, as page 22 (at least in german rules ) state so.
Here is the text translated as word by word as possible:
title: Retreating units and heroes
Heroes and units retreat in many instances. This happens mostly as a result of fights, retreats or specific cards and abilities. If a figure retreats, it gets layed down to signify that condition. Retreating units and heroes can't move or draw cards in battle respectivly duell. All figures are raised in spring (secondary function of spring-season-cards)
Of course it could be a mistranslation, but as duells are explicitly mentioned I got the impression that they won't draw in duells. While it is impossible in german that this sentence means heroes: can't move into battle or duells, but can draw cards in duells; I don't know the original english text. In german this can only mean: Heroes can't move and they can't draw cards in duells or battles (like any other figure), when they are routed. I'm just pointing at this specific paragraph, because it's impossible to interpret it in any other way.
