I think the combat mechanics are already tuned pretty well
I'll hope you like discussing a little :i am not try to make you change ideas,but to see a little more deepply in the mechanics.
The new version changed some thing. Routed exagon now counts for tally strenght and they changed Vaal sorceress ability.
I don't know if this is for the new types of units/and ( very strong) deployment cards. BUT THEY CHANGED an already tuned pretty well combat mechanics.
Thematically routed unity that still give strenght is not very realistic.
The first change that i propose (to choose for an orb the special or one damage) helps ALL race and units. If you should play with dicse to roll a 20 and not have any advantage in some situation feels
wrong
The second change, as you notes reduce the effectiveness of routs,but put them in relationship with the life strenght of your army:You can call this caos, but i call the effectiviness of routs as is now a lot more luck caotic.
I have not a mathematical mind,so i notable to calculate total units races that enjoy from routs much over another ...may be the elves,but now they have the new Vaal ability.
P.S i rember in the past i propose a variant ispired on a spanish one and you told me that was not good put to many importance on cities...Then they made Banners with supercities... :D
