I really think your group might have played with a lot of errors. There is no way you can have an army of 16 in a hex. As the guy above mentioned, the max limit a hex can hold is 8. During winter, you destroy units till it is equal to your food value.
I never said you had an army of 16 in the hex, I said you attacked with 16. I think you might be the one with errors here. As has been mentioned many times, you can attack from multiple hexes and can attack with more than 8. Based on your earlier comments you should really check the rules yourself.

As for location, the first player puts out all the possible starting hexes, and the last player has the first pick of location. So if he picks out 1 good location and 2 bad locations, tough luck, the last player would pick the better one.
I was trying to point out that you should be wary when building the map of situations like this. Also as the first player you will be picking your home realm last, so it is 100% in your favor to make sure there are no amazing home realm areas. Of course you didn't really argue with any point I made... just argued to argue. So meh.

PS: How can you say "too little strategy" when dice are so random compared to card draw? ;p
When you have increased randomness you lessen the importance of strategy. You can do things to try and put the odds in your favor, but it doesn't matter except for the dice roll. A strong dice roll beats a perfect strategy every time.
With the cards, there are a limited number of outcomes. You can actually do the math and account for the situation. I know there are x amount of misses for these types of units on the cards and x of them are used. i.e. Based on the cards already used I have a 80% chance of hitting/routing/special and at max 2 of my triangle units won't hit.
Now for some people this kind of analysis is not fun, they don't like to look at things that way, I do. I prefer the analysis to throwing and knowing that I have no control. So to me the dice takes away from the strategy. You may not view it that way, but that's one of the main reasons I prefer the cards.
