That scenario book is a gold mine for new ways to play.However there are just a couple little tweaks that turn the game from a war of attrition to a war of blood.
1. Go to 7 runes, face up, with no fakes. Epic Game Variant in the rulebook.
2. Play with 1 fewer map tile.
3. Don't end the game at the end of year x, if a season deck runs out of cards, reshuffle into a new deck. Tends to work better if you take out the ones that give runes when you shuffle.
This makes it impossible for each player to just turtle in their corner until the end of the year timer. Although this will also drastically increase the length of the game depending who you play with.
