I would go with the new version.

The new components are slightly worse, it is true - no 3d plastic mountains, thinner race sheets. However, the new version also has a smaller box, which is a big deal for me - I was never happy storing coffin boxes on my shelf.

The new version also has some gameplay tweaks - several rulebook changes and improved abilities for sorceresses, all for the better. Yes I suppose you could printout a new rulebook and take a sharpie to the sheet for the sorcs. But it's nice not to have to.

I thought the only changes were the rule book and mountains. Is there anything else that is physical besides the sorceresses.

This is what the FFG site says:

There are four differences:

-The revised edition comes in an 11 5/8 x 11 5/8 x 4 inch box, about half the size of the original edition’s box.

-There are no three-dimensional plastic mountains in the revised edition.

-Faction sheets in the revised edition are not punchboard, but instead heavy card stock (similar to the Civilization sheets in Sid Meier’s Civilization: The Board Game).

-Map tiles that are too long for the revised edition’s box size have been split, with puzzle-cut connection points in the middle for quick assembly during setup.

The Sorceress ability was changed (basically, the change is that the Latari player chooses the target now). There are other gameplay changes, though, but you can download the rulebook for free. A couple cards had wording changes to match the revised edition, too, but those are listed in the "Gameplay Changes" document on FFG's site.

Overall, some rules were tweaked, but you can use those changes with the original edition; the components overall didn't change except aesthetically (with the small exceptions of a few wording changes).

Personally, I would go for the Coffin Box version, if the bigger box's space-taking isn't an issue. The revised edition is fine, but I do think the quality of the stuff in the Coffin box makes it more worthwhile. You can then download and print the revised rules if you want, along with the "changes" document, and you should be good to go.
