I think most people think it's a very good game. At release there seemed to have been a bit more criticism related to some things (the ending and the link between heroes & other parts of the game missing) but I think all those parts have been improved by the revised version and the expansion. Although Scott will be the first one to say that the original game is just fine as it is :) I'd tend to agree, but I looove the extra year. I think that discussion might have put off some buyers when it came out. Also, the game is expensive and a lot of people talked about there not being that much stuff inside the box. Which is true, but on the other hand you get a lot of different kind of miniatures, just not as much as in some other games. As far as actual content goes, this game is very replayable even without the expansion, so you certainly get your money's worth.
It's also pretty highly ranked here. Also, if you check something like fortressat.com, it frequently pops up in discussion there and people really like it.
I don't know why people don't discuss it more. Maybe there's not as much as to tweak as there's in TI3 (that is somewhat broken out of the box) for an example. Or maybe because Runewars is more about tactical decisions and just crazy fun randomness, it doesn't allow for that much deeper strategy discussion either. Not saying that as a bad thing, but rather it's a game where you really have to think in the moment and you can't necessarily make long term strategy plans or try to min max your armies or something.

I totally agree with you! I think that Runewars is a really great game right out of the box. Nothing really to tweak here what the revised edition or the expansion not already did. The rules seem pretty good written and clear and we have a great FAQ provided by Scott. So there are not that many rules questions.
However, I wouldn't say that there are "not as many miniatures as in other games". There are really a lot of miniatures. They are just really small which makes them appear few in quantity :) The coffinbox however is really filled with a lot of chinese air! Thats the reason why it was quite easy to rerelease it in a half the size box without a lot of issues. Still: The table is packed with stuff when you play it. No worries about a component ripoff here ;)
And as we can read in a different thread here: There will very soon be an english video with rules explanation here on the Geek!
