But even if my, as an attacker, abilities or routs affect the enemy, he will still resolve his effects? Is it only damage that prevent enemy units of the same initiative to act??

If your opponent drew 5 cards, he will resolve all 5 cards regardless of what happens to his figures. Even if all 5 of his are damage cards, and all 4 of yours are damage cards; if the damage kills off his units, the cards he drew are still applied. The combat is still pretty much simultaneous, the main reason for the "attacker first" rule is so that where decisions are to be made (ie, who to apply damage to), the defender has to make that decision first.

The only time that a drawn card will NOT have an effect once it's drawn is with a few of the special abilities - specifically, abilities that hinge on having "standing units". If the player doesn't have enough standing units to trigger the effect, then the ability does nothing.

For example, let's say you have a battle of one Pegasus Rider attacking one Berserker. Both have the same initiative (2), and let's say they both draw an Orb. The Pegasus Rider ability goes first, routing the enemy Berserker. Then the Berserker ability is looked at - but to use the Berserker ability, you must sacrifice a STANDING Berserker, and there aren't any, so the orb has no effect.

So, except for those cases where standing units are required, all cards drawn are resolved, even if the units that you drew them for become routed, retreated, or destroyed during the round.
