I tend to agree with Curt on many things but I was surprised at his reaction to Eclipse.
I assume you mean this. Yeah, I tend to feel more inclined to write about something that many geeks get all frothed up in excitement about, but which I find ultimately don't work for me. My latest is here. I guess it's a way to vent my frustrations. I suppose it's no wonder that publishers aren't rushing to send me review copies of games. Perhaps I should try to write more positive reviews, but I just find that most games already have plenty of people singing their praises.
Speaking of Eclipse, some folks were playing it again last night while I was playing Mage Wars. I finished a little before the Eclipse game did, so I watched the last couple turns. The players who came in 1st and 2nd (regular members of our group) were way ahead of 3rd and 4th. When I asked what happened, they explained that the 3rd and 4th players (less regular members of our group) fought more. The player who won fought as little as possible. I keep hearing that you can win by being aggressive, but I just haven't seen in, at least against good players where the table is split with some players playing aggressively, and some conservatively. The player in 3rd place was literally begging the player in the lead to fight with the player in 2nd. The player in 1st asked why he should, and the response was, "because it's fun". That is just completely anathema to the way we approach boardgames.
