My understanding of component changes is that the 3d mountains are gone and that the larger of the tile pieces have been cut in half.Not having the 3d mountains means they dont have to have punch outs on the tiles.
So I imagine it was a cost of production choice.
The revised edition is $60ish I believe and IRCC the Coffin was closer to $100?
