Is it common for battles to take place without drawing fate cards?

I'm still learning the game and came across a scenario where two undead Necromancer's started a battle against a neutral Sorcerer. The human player took control of the Sorcerer (does this unit go on initiative 4 because the human board has no circle base spot?).

Is the battle an instant victory because it was a strength of 2 to 1?
