And it's nice because if they had just said that the defender can choose how to assign damage any way they want, they would distribute it in a way to minimize the loss of units.So this method has a benefit for the defender in that they get to choose which unit(s) die first, and a benefit to the attacker in that they are ensured that the damage they are dealing isn't spread out to lessen the effect.
