The combat system is pretty involved, making it feel like there's a lot going on. Each unit has different levels of killing capability, initiative, hitpoints, and special text. Each time a unit attacks it could potentially score hits, routs, or trigger the special text. And each faction has a unique set of units. Decisions during combat resolution revolve mostly around assigning damage and routs, on a comparable level to Nexus Ops. Although deciding who to kill in Nexus Ops is much more interesting.

Combat is involved enough so that you're engaged with carrying it out. However the meaningful decisions amidst the battle is disproportionately small. Despite that, I'm rather favorable of the combat system, since its better than a decision-less dice chucking affair in most games.

Ultimately, you won't be playing or buying Runewars for its combat system, but for the fantasy empire building of epic scope.
