I wish someone would come up with a more streamlined and accessible ruleset that could breathe new life into this game.

Dumbing down the game may make it more accessible to more casual gamers, but it would kill the appeal for many people as well. There are other games that may suit that type of gamer more.

It wouldn't kill the appeal for anyone, as the current rules will still exist.

And streamlining does not always mean dumbing down.

For those that get to play and enjoy that game, that's awesome, and no one can take that away from you.

For others who feel there's something in here that could be great for them, but requires less obtuse rules and shorter gameplay (ie don't have 5 hours for their first game), perhaps it could benefit from an alternate simplified ruleset.

Making simplified rules would change the game. Such would not appeal to me. Yes, the old rules would still be there, but I would be looking at that game, not the stripped-down version.

While sometimes streamlining can be beneficial, all too often it also removes a lot of the core aspects of a game that make it what it is. A lot of the so-called "Twilight Imperium-lite" games are nothing of the sort, because the elements they try to "streamline" end up changing the very fabric of what the game is.

(Also, while I know some people have had 5-hour games, I've yet to have one even come close, even when playing with new players. For the most part, in 5 hours, I could often fit 2 or 3 games of Runewars in there, depending on who I'm playing with).
