I get the impression he's more of a Eurogamer, and this kind of game is definitely not a eurogame.I haven't seen the review, but I think his conclusions are misguided. If battles are tedious, it's because players aren't paying attention. Once you know the game, a battle only takes about 1 or 2 minutes, tops, and can often be resolved even faster if it's small.
As for heroes being disjointed, while the expansion and the revised edition addressed that, I don't think it was ever really as much a problem, and stating such just indicates lack of experience with the game. They are an important part of the game, and knowing how to use them properly is a key to winning.
Basically, again, while I haven't seen the review itself, I just think this type of game isn't his type of game. For me, it's one of my all-time favorites, as I think it has a lot of depth and replayability, and while it is a bit complex and maybe has a steep learning curve, all the complexity adds to the game, and I don't find any of it to be fiddly.
I'd say, give it a try.
