I think this can be something that lessens with time and more experience. Sure, there is some randomness that can really turn the tide, but more often I think a player who has a better army in a battle will tend to have better results. If you attack bringing in an army of roughly equal power as the defending army, you run the risk of a few bad pulls turning the tide. Usually you want to attack with superior forces (or at least with "faster" troops that can get their attacks in first).

When you start planning battles accordingly, it starts making the battles a lot more strategic. Again, there is still some randomness, but it can be mitigated. (I've seen a Twilight Imperium battle where one side statistically had about a 5% chance of winning still pull off victory due to the way the dice rolled out, but that's definitely not the norm).
