There is a season card "Prepare for the coming Year" which let's every player buy a new or another objective card for one influence token.I know, that there is a hand max of one objective card for every player, so drawing another objective card forces the player to immediately discard one.
I also know already, that players, who already resolved their former objective, can buy another objective card with this opportunity, so that is not my question.
Imagine the following situation: In a game, where fewer than three cities are in play, I still have my first objective card on my hand when the above mentioned season card is revealed. I decide to buy another objective card. The drawn card is "Spread the good Word", which I may discard when fewer than three cities are in play, which is the case. Now, what are the further steps:
(1) First I reduce to my hand limit of one objective card. If I decide to keep "Spread the good Word", then I can also discard this card, to draw a new one.
(2) First I may discard "Spread the good Word" if I want, to draw a replacement card. Then I decide between the replacement objective card and my original objective card, which to keep.
Note, that the difference between (1) and (2) is, that I have the choice between a known and an unknown objective card in (1), whereas I have the choice between two known objective cards in (2).
Working assumption: (1) is correct, because discarding to hand max is always immediate and comes before any card text instructions.
The answer to this question is also relevant for some other good objective cards, which can optionally be discarded if certain game conditions occur.
