I think most people think it's a very good game. At release there seemed to have been a bit more criticism related to some things (the ending and the link between heroes & other parts of the game missing) but I think all those parts have been improved by the revised version and the expansion. Although Scott will be the first one to say that the original game is just fine as it is :) I'd tend to agree, but I looove the extra year. I think that discussion might have put off some buyers when it came out. Also, the game is expensive and a lot of people talked about there not being that much stuff inside the box. Which is true, but on the other hand you get a lot of different kind of miniatures, just not as much as in some other games. As far as actual content goes, this game is very replayable even without the expansion, so you certainly get your money's worth. It's also pretty highly ranked here. Also, if you check something like fortressat.com, it frequently pops up in discussion there and people really like it.
I don't know why people don't discuss it more. Maybe there's not as much as to tweak as there's in TI3 (that is somewhat broken out of the box) for an example. Or maybe because Runewars is more about tactical decisions and just crazy fun randomness, it doesn't allow for that much deeper strategy discussion either. Not saying that as a bad thing, but rather it's a game where you really have to think in the moment and you can't necessarily make long term strategy plans or try to min max your armies or something.
